The key to the performance boost in ACR is that the new release of Camera Raw can now store some of its workflow settings in the GPU, rather than on the local disk. PS and LrC cannot store the settings in the GPU and have to run the processor intensive “pre-flight” and “post-flight” checks for every image, even though the images are likely to be cached in RAM. Since it does not need to check the integrity of the images it can read the image data directly from the RAM.

The other benefit of the GPU enabled is that it is able to store the lens profiles for the new RAW formats. In the new raw formats, lenses are defined by what it calls “Camera Calibration”, which is a struct that can include 25 or more lens data points for each profile. ACR is able to store the lens profile in the GPU and makes it much faster to apply the profile. The default settings are for the D4200 and we see a dramatic improvement from previous releases, where even in ACR 12 the new raw formats required you to apply the lens profile twice, once using the RAW editor, and again using the LENS PROFILES dialog.
