The default rendering method seems to be ray tracing, which is all fine except that it is slower when rendering more complex objects. The render settings are preset for this software as well – no options to change any of them.

The big plus for this application is the 3D content of the Stager panel which can be imported and used as assets to your own projects. While the sample content is poor and the video cant be played in the 3D Stager panel, its amazing how close you can get to the look of a photorealistic 3D project from a video. I was able to find not one but two under-the-hood 3D projects which I imported as assets to the panel. Why dont I get a credit for that? Probably because I didnt apply for a license.

Another big plus for the 3D Stager is how it simplifies the complex task of adding 3D content. Both layers of my 3D projects had a separate depth and position options. The layer positioned on top was always used to render. For the layer below this is where I have all my settings like textures and materials applied. I could even add content separately to the panel, completely replacing the top content layer. I found no way of doing this with the 3D Stager. At best it could add a new layer with the adjustment to the existing layer.

This app isnt much use for 3D design. It is not so much an app as a tool. How many products are sold each year on the price of Photoshop costing at least $500-700 to purchase? This is not really an appropriate use for this software. However, it is still more useful than the traditional 3D Stager renderer, which is about as useful as that 3D equivalent of AutoCAD you bought in the 1990s.

It means, for example, that you can do basic conversions between image types (e.g., TIFF to PNG) or make basic adjustments (brightness, color tone, or contrast). Not only does it provide a stopgap for you while you get the rest of the program, but having scripting capabilities enhances functionality. On the other hand, if you don’t have a need to script, why would you pay for software that you can already get for free? I just bought CS6, but haven’t gotten around to getting my license for Creative Cloud. Hope I don’t….
