Ok. I have learned some new stuff! I tried the AMDGPU-fan-control-script and was not successful. I simply tried to use the firmware flag supported_feature in the config file. I think the problem is in the way I wrote the script, I have my command directory, and all my script has to do is cp /usr/share/fancontrol/config/amdgpu.conf.default /proc/driver/gpu and run the script. Is there any way of auto generating the config file?

To proceed with FanControl configuration, open Fancontrol, and click Add Colors, which will open the window below. At this point you have two choices. You can either use the default colors given by Test Mode or use a custom color set for Custom mode. Both of the modes works the same way, though for the custom mode you need to create a custom color for both the Edge Color and the Title Color.

you can get FanControl running on Linux for Mac using Boot Camp or Linux and Boot Camp simultaneously. But then you get a pretty bad problem: The Linux kernel does not read the temp. of the disks in Windows unless you tell it to. Read the Windows boot log to learn how to do that.

When you boot Windows, it will do a lot of fan control stuff automatically. You’ll see various configurations files (maintained at /var/s0/FcOutput) that control fan speed with SMC, the controlled fans will have some names that have non-standard fntypes in them (i.e. Temp(0014) in the file, temperature in Fahrenheit). Simply editing these fntypes to reflect the actual fan will not do the trick. You have to move all the files to a new location if you want FanControl to be able to find the disks, the fan control files and the script at all. You have to change the script entirely if you want to use a different temperature/condition formula for fan speeds (but not RPMs), the formula will have to reference the new path for the disks. If you are, like me, the fan control results aren’t exactly what you want and you’re too lazy to do the above, then unfortunately you might just have to do some searching and editing as the folks above me already mentioned it. This was solved for me as I just updated the config from Macbook to Macbook Pro, I simply changed the disk model name names to match Macbook Pro (as well as adding some irrelevant ones as everything was already covered) and now the scripts find the disks.

The script writes out the temp and pre-configures some things to make the task more user friendly. Since this is a big hassle, it’s better to just have a version that’s perfect to your needs.

FanControl is a useful tool in the battle against NVidia and AMD’s attempt to control your CPU and GPU temperatures. FanControl is the best tool choice in that battle. In FanControl’s previous versions, you couldn’t customize the sensors from which it draws the graph. With the new version, that limitation is gone and you can customize your fan curves from 10 types, but unfortunately, these 10 fan curves cannot be disabled.

The configuration file format was also changed in the new release. Instead of being driven by the FANCONTROL script, you now have to edit the configuration file by hand. To do this, you run pwmconfig, and select the hwmon device to be controlled, the temperature sensor being used, and the fan being controlled. Once you have selected these three things, you edit your configuration file to be as follows:

When done, the script saves your settings and restarts the pwmconfig process. After it has done so, run fancontrol-configure to view and make sure you didn’t miss anything, and to generate a new configuration file.

Then, in the /etc/fancontrol directory, create a configuration file called pwm-name.conf where pwm-name stands for the pwm number being controlled. This should look as follows:

FanControl also has an i3status plugin which gives us some information about the current state of the fans, as well as some minimal control of them. Right click on the i3status tray icon to enable the plugin, and click on the tray icon to open the plugin menu. Now select FanControl, and add it to your i3status menu. Select Fancontrol to start the fan controllers. You’ll now have to enter your fan paths in your FANCONTROL config file.

I noticed this through the trial and error of getting fancontrol working on Linux for my AM4 motherboard. I think the simplest solution is to simply take fancontrol out of it’s “service” function, and move it’s code into a function of it’s own, which is then called in the appropriate points. It will be required to be “Requires=lm_sensors.service”, etc. Then it just needs to run the function and then lm_sensors.service, in that order. This would fix the file parse issues that I introduced, as it would check the fd, and kill the service if it was found to be out of date, just like it does in.service files.

I’ve tested the above with my system, and it works. Both my new fan control and my working fancontrol work. Running fancontrol first, then fan control, does not work. It acts like fancontrol takes longer, and the fan control method is more CPU intensive. I don’t know if this is normal, or if I somehow created this by accident. I haven’t looked at the code to figure out what happens, yet.

I’ve done some tests and it seems that not only was FANCONTROL 1.2.4 incompatible with lm-sensors 1.4.5.21, but also there’s a bug in lm-sensors 1.4.5.21, which is fixed in the new release. See my last post for details and a better solution.

You can also leave out the script name, as it will be replaced with the script arguments, as long as you are running fancontrol from the fancontrol directory. In my case, I’m running fancontrol from the folder where the script is located:
