The huge number of colors, layers, and other features that paint.net has to offer make it a popular web graphics design tool. When it came time for me to create a brush source library to paint.net, I had to do a little more work than I expected. For a professional brush, I started with a custom-drawn one using Adobe Photoshop CS4 which you can check out at http://www.lephistic.com/custom-brush.html. For a non-professional brush, I used paint.net brush library. But to my surprise, I soon found that a lot of the brushes were actually from other software. To my knowledge, they should not be included in a standard brush library. After doing some research, I have found many brushes that seem to be from different brushes (http://www.lephistic.com/2016/04/22/732-paintnet-shameless-cuts-plus-a-mirror/), so I decided to build my own brush library. This is an open source one that I will be sharing through my website to any brush creators who want to add to it. You can check out the source code over here: http://www.lephistic.com/bmsource/
I have been using paint.net for many years and it is a great piece of software for creating web graphics and do simple image editing. It is quite easy to learn for beginners.
Just beware when you download from their website. Use the blue link (with version number) on the top right of the page when you download. The big green Start download and Click here are ads that will give you things you most likely dont want. But since paintnet is free I guess they need to get revenue from somewhere.

The new brush menu is way easier to use. The new version’s ability to stop the brush regardless of how thick it is should make a lot of people happy. It was probably an oversight, and I’m glad it was the way it is… however I think the world would be a better place if Paint.NET had a larger brush-choice.
This is a short and simple website for Windows XP and Paint.NET. The part where it says “Who Uses Paint.NET and Why Is It Important” is mostly for humor. If you are a Windows XP user and you don’t know why Paint.NET is a good program to use, then it is already “using” you, since it is the default picture editor in Windows. But if you do know the benefits of Paint.NET and want to learn more about it, here is a site with great info and guides for those who want to use it.
Regardless of your thoughts on Paint.NET, I certainly think the idea is a good one (The company started in 1995 and has had several products). But I cannot for the life of me understand their system of trying to have 3 different installations of the same app on a single machine, nor for the life of me understand why they make my life such a pain with every new version.
I was happy with Paint.NET 5.2.1, until Paint.NET 6.0 introduced the ability to auto-save. This is a bad idea: Paint.NET should do what it can to keep as few files as possible and even take care not to save until you specify to, because any unsaved work should be saved before running whatever tool you’re using.
I wasnt impressed with Paint.NET until version 7 arrived, which has a new, and helpful, Plug-in system. Its also a lot more feature rich and performant than previous versions and unlike many popular image-manipulation apps, isnt bloated at all. In fact, it doesnt even support layers. Thankfully, I use Paint.NET by the browser (which I use in Windows 8 and 7) instead of the desktop app, so I dont have to worry about getting stuck in a version from 5 years ago.
What’s new in Paint.NET
- Feature Selection Tool – A smaller version of the Select Area tool that lets you accurately select a region to apply an Action, Filter or Layer Style. You can now create your own Actions, Filters or Layer Styles with this tool.
- Better Export Path dialog – A simplified dialog allowing you to save to a.PSD. You can still Save As.PSD, but the new dialog shows more options and is simpler to use.
- Define Filter range – Allows you to create custom filter ranges. In the past, you’d need to create a filter range using the Select and Edit Filters dialog.
- Layer Ordering dialog – A new Layer Ordering dialog that allows you to easily set up your layer hierarchy for Projects.
- Layer Ordering Toolbar – The most common actions and tools (including Free Transform) are now located on the new toolbar.
